In Austria, a distinction is made based on the weight stated in the vehicle registration document (F1):
- Towing vehicles with a technically permissible maximum mass of up to and including 3,500 kg and
- Towing vehicles with a technically permissible maximum mass of over 3,500 kg
Toweing vehicles of up to and including 3,500 kg:
- If the 'technically permissible gross vehicle weight' does not exceed 3500 kg (as stated on the vehicle registration certificate), you are required to purchase the vignette and, where applicable, the special route toll. e.g. digitally and with immediate effect via our partner mautwelt.de.
- No additional toll is payable for trailers of any kind, provided that the towing vehicle's technically permissible gross vehicle does not exceed 3,500 kg.
Towing vehicles exceeding 3,500 kg:
- As soon as the weight documented in your vehicle registration certificate exceeds 3,500 kg, it is mandatory in Austria to carry a toll box that has been activated for use in Austria.
- Depending on whether the vehicle is officially registered as a motorhome (vehicle classes with an ‘M’) or as a vehicle for commercial goods transport (lorries) (vehicle classes with ‘N’), a choice can be made between the ‘Toll box for motorhomes and vehicles over 3 m’ and the ‘Toll box for commercial lorries over 3 m and over 3.5 t in weight’ when selecting toll boxes from maut1.de.
- For towing vehicles registered as motorhomes with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes, trailers are not to be taken into account and have no effect on the amount of toll to be paid, whereas for lorries, the number of axles can and must be set at the toll box.
NOTE: Please ensure, where applicable, that the toll box is compatible for use in France if your vehicle actually weighs no more than 4,500 kg, is no higher than 3.05 m when measured without superstructures, and has no more than two axles.
