Here you will find information on the following points:
- Why is the windshield coating so important for the toll box?
- What is a windshield coating?
- My windshield does not have a dotted area at the top center.
- Can I still use the toll box if my vehicle's windshield does not have a coating recess?
Why is the windshield coating so important for the toll box?
The maut1 toll box communicates with toll booths equipped with barriers via DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication). This radio signal can be (occasionally) disrupted or completely interrupted by any kind of metal layer, meaning that the toll box signal can no longer be detected (properly) and the barriers remain closed occasionally or permanently.
What is a windshield coating?
Windshield coatings that have been a standard feature in most vehicles for many years and can interfere with the metal layer include:
- Heated windshields/infrared heating (e.g., with silver coating)
- Acoustic glazing
- Solar Protect
- Insulating glass
- Climate Comfort
- Low E coating
- Thermal insulation glazing
- Ceramic coating/ceramic sealing
- Silicon (oxide) coating
- Retrofitted window seals
These disruptive metallic coatings are not normally visible to the naked eye.
We ask for your understanding that we cannot make any binding statements about your windshield. However, experience has shown that a marked area (dots/shading/hatching) in the rearview mirror area is almost always the area without a metal layer in the glass and is usually specifically intended for toll boxes.
We therefore ask you to attach the toll box within the dotted area. Otherwise, the barriers may occasionally or even always remain closed or only open with a significant delay.
My windshield does not have a dotted area at the top center.
Please note that for windshields without a dotted field, the following options are possible:
- The windshield is not metallized and the exact mounting position is not critical for the toll box to function.
- The windshield has a metallic coating and a recess that is not visibly marked or otherwise indicated. Information on the intended mounting position of toll devices can often be found in the vehicle manual or obtained directly from the manufacturer/dealer.
- The windshield has a metallized coating without a recess and the toll box cannot be used with the vehicle as intended. The last option in these cases is to always hold the toll box out of the side window 50 m in front of a toll barrier and continuously from there until you have reached the barrier.
As we are not the manufacturer of the windshield or the vehicle, and different windshields are installed even within the same vehicle model, we are unfortunately unable to provide you with binding information about the features of your windshield.
Can I still use the toll box if my vehicle's windshield does not have a coating recess?
If you cannot find a recess in the coating on your windshield, we can only offer the use of the toll box if it is held out of the side window 50 m in front of a toll barrier and continuously from there until you have reached the barrier.
Austria with the 'Toll Box motorhomes and vehicles over 3 m height' and 'Toll Box for commercial trucks over 3 m high and over 3.5 t weight': If your vehicle's windshield is fully coated, we cannot offer the use of the toll box in Austria. Holding it out is difficult here, as there are no toll booths, but the signal is repeatedly detected while passing checkpoints. An alternative for vehicles over 3.5 t in Austria is the Split-GO-Box from the Austrian toll operator ASFINAG.
